Denim jeans were rolling out of control for a very long time, in fact Jean prices were mounting so
high that were reaching to the point of unaffordablility. However, for any product that becomes overpriced, there finally comes a market correction and that is what happened to designer woman jeans!
Before the recession, “premium” denim was one of the fastest growing markets of the apparel business, and there seemed to be no limit to what customers would pay for the latest label, fit, finish, wash or whatever celebrities wore. $250 to $700 was the normal price for the labels like Christian Audigier Jeans, Joe’s Jeans or Rich & Skinny Jeans. Annual sales of all women’s jeans were actually up 5 percent over last year to $8.2 billion through August.
With jeans, it just felt more obvious that some kind of game was being played; the basic elements, after all, had not changed substantially in decades: five pockets, cotton, some rivets!
Even fashion experts and designers seemed to be a bit worried about the issue. “Charging $600 for jeans for no reason at all — those days are over,” said You Nguyen, the senior vice president of women’s merchandising and design for Levi Strauss & Company.
Scott Morrison, one of the founders of Paper Denim & Cloth and Earnest Sewn, said, “Five years ago,
it was easy to start a jeans company. You basically have a market that is the fastest growing segment in the apparel business, and stores are overbuying because of it.”
However, change was in the air! Mr. Rosso of Diesel also sensed it was time for a change. Last week, he met with his team of designers to give them a challenge, he said, to reinvent denim in a “younger way, a fresher way.”
At last, the “Premium Jeans” bubble has busted and badly! The new price for “Designer Jeans” is now rounding about $200 and below! Jeff Rudes, a founder of J-Brand Jeans states a reasonable argument for the downfall- “The floors at most of the major stores were so over-assorted that they almost looked like Loehmann’s. They were just cramming jeans onto the racks.”
So here are the new prices for women designer jeans!
Antik Denim for $79.99, Christian Audigier for $99.00, Rich & Skinny Jeans for 82.35 and Joe’s jeans for 99.99!
